2012 Olympic Games

The 2012 Olympic Games will take place in London and will feature a number of sports that surge in popularity during the Games, including cycling, rowing, and soccer. The soccer, or football as it is called in Europe, portion of the Olympics will take place July 25 through August 11 at six stadiums across the London area. Made up of 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams, the international tournament will feature 288 men and 216 women. Although there are no age restrictions on the women’s team, men’s teams must consist primarily of men under age 23, although each team may include three older players.

Men’s soccer first became part of the Olympics during the Paris Games in 1900 and has remained a popular event throughout Olympic history. Interestingly, the International Olympic Committee only recently added women’s teams to the tournament, implementing a women’s Olympic soccer division at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
